How to make a Patu.
Equipment Requirements
Saw
Wooden Mallet
Rasp
Sanding wheel
Block of Wood
Drilling Machine
Sander
Skill saw
Bevel Edge Chisel
Sharp Knife
Mussel Shell (Spoon)
Instructions
- Draw an outline of a Patu on a rectangular piece of wood.
- Cut out the straight ends with a bandsaw or skill saw.
- Saw at least 5 lines in the sides, spread them out but make sure your lines don’t go any further than your outline of your Patu.
- Chisel each corner touching one sawed out line to the other and hammer it in with a Wooden Mallet. Make sure you don't split the wood
- Rasp it until most of the flaky pieces of wood have come off.
- Sand the edges of the square patu shape so that it has a smooth sharp edge.
- Drill a hole in the bottom of the handle.
- Paint any design of your own on it. Or you can carve a design of your own.
- Say a karakia (prayer) before cutting out any adult piece of harakeke (flax).
- Scrape all the green and oranges discolouration off the harakeke with a spoon or a mussel shell until you get a nice hairy fibre.
- Rub the hairy fibre together so to form string. Do this to make 3 pieces of string.
- Tie the three string together at one end with a knot. Get a mate or family member to hold it while you do a tight plait.
- Tie a slip knot when you’re almost at the end of your plait and make a knot on the other end.
- Thread the plait through the hole in the patu handle then tie ends together using a slip knot.
- Cut off all the strands hanging off, making sure not to cut you string.
- You have finished your beautiful patu.
